Napoleon da Legend has no time to waste. This veteran of the hip-hop school just dropped his 30th studio album - an accomplishment in itself! If you're a real head in the underground, then you've long been familiar with this maestro. With albums like "Coup D'État," its sequel, "Street Universe," "Dragon Ball G," and of course the Sicknature-produced stunner "Colossus of GOATs." And don't forget the collaborations with DJ D-Styles on "Invincibl Rap Mislz" and DJ Rhettmatic on "Legmatic." The man is on a mission.
Most recently, Napoleon had a partnership with JR Swiftz on the insane release "Great Minds." And now Giallo Point and he are a team again on "F.L.A.W. (Following Lies Always Wounds)" which adds a new dimension of saltiness to his catalog. The track "Chasing Shadows" immediately throws the tone, with its menacing vibe and the promise of something drastic about to happen.
In "Life or Death," featuring Jay Royale, they talk about the harsh reality in which only the strong survive. You can sense the energy: this track will "vibrate the ceiling of your apartment. "That Ain't It" goes into the basement and focuses on the daily hustle of hustling, while "Welcome 2 the Theater" (featuring Ghost Machine) turns the spotlight on all those insipid rappers who think they can take on the world.
"Unforgiving," along with Invisible Handz, tells the honest story of how the game is unfair and how former rivals are now nonexistent. A spirited return to boom bap comes with "No Morals," which suggests that conscious rap and gangsta vibes are ultimately two sides of the same coin. The track "Doing What I Gotta Do" is like a mantra for anyone doing what it takes to survive, followed by the macabre "Nesquik" that speaks of losing in rap.
"Solar Opposites," in which Eloh Kush participates, is a powerful testament to their knowledge and wisdom that grabs many a throat. Next, "Motivation" emphasizes that it could be much easier for everyone to get motivated. Along with Sunez Allah, Napoleon dives deeper into the subject matter of "F.L.A.W." - the injuries that lying can bring.
Nejma Nefertiti appears on "Presume the Unpredictable," with the message: from cradle to grave, these MCs have no pity. "Marathon" closes the record and interweaves the Japanese philosophy about owning three masks. This last track confirms Napoleon's status as a constant force in the scene.
Although the features were a little less impressive this time around, Giallo Point's production is just at the right level - rock hard and salty. Dropping another such classic album within a month of "Great Minds," Napoleon da Legend leaves no stone unturned. The message is clear: Don't be fooled by lies. Score: a fat 9/10.
