K.A.A.N., the emcee and producer from Columbia, Maryland, shows how to keep the hip-hop scene salted with his latest project, “Anger Management.” This is no less than his 28th LP, and this dude keeps banging away with releases that leave a lasting impression. His discography is a salt-rich collection of dope projects like “Black Blood,” the masterpiece “Requiem for a Dream Deferred” produced by Ski Beatz, and the spicy “All Praise is Due” with Big Ghost Ltd. Recent gems such as “Mission Hillz,” “The Death of a Rapper,” “The Nightly News” with MIKE SUMMERS, aka Seven, and the combination of “Peace of Minds” with “Delusions of Grandeur” produced by DJ Hoppa established his name as a serious player. And just when the reactions to “Yesterday” were a bit lukewarm, K.A.A.N. and Hoppa hit back rock hard with “Anger Management.”.
The title track kicks off with a fat flute along with kicks and snares, while K.A.A.N. tells his story as a former problem child. “Back to It” has those classic boom bap vibes, perfect for exploring who's really hard and who's not. On “I.D.C. (I Don't Care),” he throws an organ into the mix for an uncomplicated nearly four-minute session full of unfiltered saltiness. “What Do You See?” is a track with a powerful question: do you feel what I feel when you look into my eyes?
On “Anger Management,” Coyote comes in as the sole feature, doing his part on the track “Breaking Bad” - a bright ode to one of the most legendary series ever. Meanwhile, “Smoke & Mirrors” pokes through facades - nothing is what it seems. “Ego Death” has a mysterious boom bap feel focusing on how ego can control your thoughts. “The Infamous” keeps it underground but soars to great heights.
In “The Problem” vol. 2, K.A.A.N. returns with his story of an unresolved conflict, while the track “Illin’” catapults you back to the 1990s and confirms K.A.A.N.‘s place as the ultimate illest. ’Comment Section“ plays with a jazzy sound and encourages people to park their opinions online. ”Fuck “Em Up‘ calls for people to mind their own business. ”Point of No Return“ concludes this trilogy with the acknowledgment that sometimes the lessons won are off, but that he is ready to bang.
While some may feel that K.A.A.N.“s collaboration with DJ Hoppa is coming to an end, there are plenty who cherish ”Anger Management“ as salt with a big ”Z.“ Hoppa's boom bap grooves are a golden match to the vibe on ”Yesterday," and K.A.A.N. aka Knowledge Above All Nonsense shows how to keep the salty vibes firmly in place. Even without features (except for Coyote), he shows that he more than deserves his place in the hip-hop scene.
Score: An almost perfect 9 out of 10, guests.
