La Reezy is a man who is starting to make his mark in the game from the underground scene of New Orleans, Louisiana. This emcee/producer is self-producing his fourth EP and has handed out quite a few swings to the hip-hop community in a short time. He made his entrance in early 2023 with his full-length studio debut album called “Reeborn,” then continued his rise with the EPs “We All Need Help,” “Welcome to La Reezyana” and “Pardon Me, I'm Different” earlier this year. The latter two in particular have become attention-grabbers, with La Reezy seriously claiming the spotlight with “Lareezyana Shakedown,” a version of himself he apparently had ready in the back pocket.
His latest track “Nolia Clap” mixes drumless beats with chipmunk soul and a pinch of rap rock, and it feels like a rocket about to go off. “Hardheaded” takes on a jazz-like sound and describes the story of his wayward journey, in which he acknowledges that he should have listened to his parents after all. Cool throwback vibes to the late nineties dirty south can be found on “Move,” but despite the fact that this track along with Da1TopNoch evokes quite a bit of nostalgia, some say it didn't necessarily need to be on the EP. “Tiana Anthem” drops the vocals altogether for 67 seconds of pure vibe.
On “Bad Man,” La Reezy shows more of his soul, sampling soul music in which he openly admits to his mother that he is no saint. The climax of the EP comes with “Catch the Groove,” a track that brings together chipmunk soul and drumless beats and zooms in on his life just after he turned 21, against the backdrop of the contemporary political landscapes of the United States. The powerful strings heard on the hook complete the picture. I can personally relate to that vibe, as I turned 21 myself at the end of 2017.
That La Reezy is in the spotlight is evidenced by the co-signs he gets. Think former NXT North American Champion Bronson Reed and even Juvenile from the Hot Boy$. The “Lareezyana Shakedown” was further born during a 5-beats-a-day challenge and shows that La Reezy has his artistic versatility on point. Meanwhile, other things are playing out in the scene: For example, Ricky Saints ended the record-setting reign of NXT North American Champion Oba Femi, and there are changes of guard at titles such as the NXT Women's North American Champion and TNA International Champion. In short, hip-hop is on the move, and La Reezy smells the salty opportunities.
This EP scores a fat 9 out of 10 according to those in the know. As far as we're concerned, that's pure saltiness you don't want to miss! But hey, we're curious, what do you think? Are you as salty about La Reezy's latest line of projects as we are?
