Salt-N-Pepa, the pioneers of hip-hop, have salted the game once again with their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. On Oct. 20, 2025, Cheryl ‘Salt’ James and Sandra ‘Pepa’ Denton gave an interview on ABC's Good Morning America and GMA3, where they talked about this historic milestone. Unfortunately, this moment coincided with a personal loss for Pepa, whose mother recently passed away.
Salt-N-Pepa's induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a huge step forward for female representation in hip-hop. Along with OutKast and other icons, they were recognized for their contributions to music history. Salt shared her enthusiasm, ‘It feels great. We've done everything now, right? We have the Walk of Fame, the Lifetime Achievement Award, the Grammys. We can go on and on. I don't think there's an award we haven't gotten, so we're very excited.’
Salt-N-Pepa broke barriers as the first major female rap group and the first women in rap to achieve platinum status, earning them the title ‘First Ladies of Rap. With more than 15 million records sold worldwide and hits like ’Push It,‘ ’Shoop‘ and ’Whatta Man,‘ they have salted the hip-hop scene considerably.
DJ Spinderella added, ‘I think we changed the scope of women's empowerment, or helped change it, and that feels great to be part of that change, or to help lead it. The induction ceremony will take place Nov. 8 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
This recognition comes at a time when hip-hop is gaining recognition in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with Salt-N-Pepa joining other rap pioneers honored by the institution. Their influence extends beyond music, as they have paved the way for future generations of female rappers in the industry.
At the end of the interview, both group members paid their respects to Pepa's mother, highlighting the close bond between the three pioneers of hip-hop culture.
