The hip-hop world is in shock after the loss of one of its most iconic voices: Lord Sear. On March 11, 2026, the legendary DJ and radio host passed away at the age of 53. His death was confirmed by Shade 45, SiriusXM's hip-hop station, where he was a fixture for more than two decades.
Lord Sear, born Steve Watson, began his career in the 1990s as a DJ for the hip-hop group Kurious. However, his name really became big when he joined the legendary ’Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show,‘ a program known for discovering future hip-hop icons such as Jay-Z, Nas and Wu-Tang Clan.
In the early 2000s, Sear joined Eminem's Anger Management Tour, further cementing his status in the hip-hop community. He also lent his voice to the fictional Game FM station in the ‘Grand Theft Auto III’ video games and was featured in the intro to Big Pun's 2000 album ‘Yeeeah Baby.
As host of ‘The Lord Sear Special’ on Shade 45, he remained a constant factor in hip-hop radio in recent years, sharing his passion for the culture with listeners around the world. His unique blend of classic rap and R&B, combined with his humorous storytelling style, made his show a must-listen for many fans.
The news of his passing brought a wave of tributes from fans and colleagues alike. Fat Joe shared on Instagram, ‘God bless i know him my whole career love you sear. E-40, Hit-Boy, Mickey Factz, Rapsody, Tony Yayo, 9th Wonder and Skyzoo also paid their respects to the legend.
Shade 45 has announced a special broadcast dedicated to Lord Sear, in which friends and colleagues will share memories and celebrate his life. This broadcast will take place on Thursday from 12 to 4 p.m. ET on SiriusXM.
