Big L documentary ‘The Parable of Lamont Coleman’ announced

Yo, listen up! Big L's brother, Donald Phinazee, just announced a documentary about his legendary brother. And guess what? This time the family is totally onboard, which means we're finally going to hear the real stories. The docu, titled ‘The Parable of Lamont Coleman,’ dives deep into the roots of Harlem, especially 139th Street and Lenox Avenue, the neighborhood that L called his ‘Danger Zone. This place shaped everything Big L was, both as an artist and a person.

Donald says their mother gave them a DJ machine, and Lamont went wild. He got so good that he won freestyle battles and even got a trophy bigger than himself. But it was a Run-DMC concert that really turned his life upside down. Lamont was so impressed that all he wanted to do since then was to rap.

In 1995, Big L dropped his debut album ‘Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous,’ featuring tracks such as ‘Put It On’ and ‘M.V.P.,’ which showcased his technical skills and competitive vibe. The docu also discusses the circumstances surrounding his tragic and still unsolved murder in February 1999, when he was only 24.

What is often overlooked is how big Big L's influence remained after his death. His 2000 posthumous album ‘The Big Picture’ went gold, proving that his impact was not limited to his lifetime. At the time of his death, Big L was in talks with Roc-A-Fella Records, a deal that could have taken his career to a whole new level. The docu explores these ‘what-ifs’ and celebrates the undeniable mark he left on New York hip-hop and the culture as a whole.

Expected in 2026, the film will be accompanied by an original soundtrack that will anchor the project even deeper into L's musical world and the time period that shaped him. This is a must-see for any true hip-hop fan who wants to understand the roots and impact of one of the greatest lyricists ever.

So, mark your calendar for 2026, because this docu is going to salt the game all the way!
