Boldy James and Chuck Strangers Surprise with 'Token of Appreciation'

Boldy James has dropped his twelfth studio album with Chuck Strangers, and this release is a real salty surprise in the hip-hop scene. Since his first big move in the fall of 2013, when he teamed up with super producer Alchemist for his debut album M.1.C.S. (My 1st Chemistry Set), the Detroit-based word artist has been working hard to establish his name. After signing with rapper Nas' independent label Mass Appeal Records, he went through a rough patch, but with the help of Uncle Al, he got back on the map. With powerful releases such as the Boldface EP and the album The Price of Tea in China, his comeback really began to take shape.

Boldy then came in rock hard with Manger on McNichols, produced by Sterling Toles, and the collaboration with Griselda Records for the Versace Tape EP, which felt a bit rushed despite its promise. Bo Jackson, however, was regarded on the scene as one of his best pieces of work to date, and the Super Tecmo Bo EP was also well received. Other notable releases such as Fair Exchange No Robbery and The Bricktionary show that Boldy continues to deliver consistent quality.

Now Boldy has a new project with Chuck Strangers, Token of Appreciation, which spreads salty vibes right from the first track. With B.O.B. (Big Ol' Business), Boldy lets you know what he stands for, over a laid-back beat that draws you into his story. Whale Fishing has a drumless soul sound and deals with his awareness of the possible consequences of living on the streets, while Big Paws on a Puppy adds a piano element that emphasizes determination.

Unapologetic and Lop Sided let Boldy go wild over Chuck's detailed beats, with synth organs adding a special touch to the sounds of the streets. On Global Telling, he brings a jazzy flair that highlights his mother's pride in his career, and Thank God continues with samples that pay tribute to higher powers.

UPS jumps over a harp as Boldy tells his story, and Fail Proof begins the album's final phase with a vibe that acknowledges but does not accept the risk of failure. 3rd Little Piggy offers a rich groove while Bird's Eye View closes by declaring that the sky is no limit for Boldy.

The murmurs on socials about his earlier work, such as Murder During Drug Traffic and Permanent Ink, as "mediocre" probably made the drop at Boldy. Joined by Chuck Strangers, Token of Appreciation has delivered an album that silences these critics and clearly shows that Boldy is unstoppable.

With Chuck's productions excelling in detail as well as Boldy's sharp flow, this record is definitely worth a 9/10 in our humble opinion. The album is a must for your playlist, and we bet you will enjoy it too. What do you think of this salty disc? Drop your opinion in the comments!
