Conway the Machine has salted the game again in a big way with his latest album ‘You Can't Kill God with Bullets. This release is so salty it's unbelievable how dope! As one of the founders of Griselda Records, along with his brother Westside Gunn and their cousin Benny the Butcher, Conway has made his mark on hip-hop with his unique style and hard work ethic.
On this album, Conway shows that his pen-game has only gotten more vicious. The track ‘Lightning Above the Adriatic Sea’ produced by the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League is a stunner that evokes the feel of the Super Bowl. ‘B.M.G. (Black Man is God)’ has a soulful boom bap vibe thanks to Sndtrak, in which Conway emphasizes the excellence of African-Americans. ‘Diamonds’ featuring Roc Marciano references former WWE champion Carlito over a beat by Conductor Williams, while ‘Hell Let Loose’ featuring Tony Yayo shows that insults don't affect them.
Timbaland's contribution to ‘Crazy Avery’ is surprisingly good, despite previous concerns about his recent AI experiments. ‘The Painter’ with Daringer discusses the problems others don't need in their lives. After the ‘Undying’ interlude, ‘Nu Devils’ with G Herbo takes a trap route, produced by araabMUZIK and Beat Butcha, with both artists spitting their gangsta shit. ‘Otis Driftwood’ highlights how Conway has improved over time over a beat by JR Swiftz.
In the album's second half, ‘Mahogany Walls’ promises that Drumwork will rule forever, with Conductor's lo-fi boom bap sound. ‘Parisian Nights’ celebrates success over an E. Jones instrumental with sampled and screened vocals at the end. Lead single ‘17.5’ goes for a drumless style and paints images of the gangsta lifestyle, while ‘Attached’ discusses with Lady London how the future doesn't exist when you live in the past.
Apollo Brown incorporates a soul sample into ‘Never Sleep,’ adds some kicks and snares and asks God for forgiveness for his bad ways. ‘Hold Back Tears’ discusses the feeling of losing someone who was close to your heart. The Alchemist removes the drums in ‘Organized Mess’ and describes the life money has brought him over the past 10 years. The closing ‘Don't Even Feel Real (Dreams)’ ends the album on a soulful boom bap-tip and discusses how his success is unreal to him.
Conway took more time with ‘You Can't Kill God with Bullets’ than with his previous releases, and that was a smart move. While I loved his earlier work, this is without a doubt the most enjoyed album of his since ‘God Don't Make Mistakes.’ He approaches songwriting in a way that is relatable to many, whether it's celebrating, dating, losing someone special or struggling with mental health, while developing the sentiments of ‘Reject 2’ and ‘G.O.A.T. (Grimiest Of All-Time).’.
With a score of 9/10, this album is a must-listen for any hip-hop fan. Conway has salted the game again in a big way with this release.”
