Delmar Drew Arnaud, better known as Daz Dillinger, is a true veteran of the hip-hop game. This old hand from Long Beach, California, is not just another name on the street. He has been associated with iconic figures such as Brandy, her brother Ray J, the legendary Snoop Dogg (now in the WWE Hall of Fame), and AEW tbs champion Mercedes Moné. In the early ’90s, Daz made his entrance at the illustrious Death Row Records, where he learned the ropes from none other than Dr. Dre himself. Not much later, he joined Kurupt to form Tha Dogg Pound, a duo that gave the West Coast Hip Hop scene a big salty boost.
Daz went solo in ’98 with his debut album on Death Row, titled “Retaliation, Revenge & Get Back.” This record popped rock hard and landed in the top ten of the Billboard 200. But he didn't stop there - he went his own way, founding his label Gangsta Advisory Records and dropping no fewer than 19 solo albums. Recently, Tha Dogg Pound breathed new life into their style with the album “W.A.W.G. (We All We Got).”.
Daz's latest album, ’Retaliation, Revenge & Get Back 2,“ is like a trip down memory lane to his glory days. The record opens with an in-your-face track by Tha Dogg Pound, along with RBX and Soopafly. It's a tribute to the good old Death Row days. ”Calculate the Time“ shows its homage to the coolest cats in the game, while ”West Coast is the Best Coast“ lifts a fat finger to the rest of the States - because yeah, the sun always shines brighter on the West Coast, right?
The album remains just as iconic with hard-hitting tracks like “Retaliation & Revenge,” in which Daz brings violent streets to life. And when you think it can't get any harder, he throws in “Get Bacc” to let you know he's gansgter and always will be. With contributions from legends like the late Big Skye and B-Legit, tracks like “Start Bacc Bangin’” and “We Came to Play” bring back those classic G-Funk vibes all over again.
“Switchin’ Lanez” with Lil’ C-Style takes you back to the hustle times of yesteryear. And with “Like a Movie,” Tha Dogg Pound puts your life down like a real blockbuster. “Destiny” speaks to the ambition and path that had long been set for Daz, while the tribute track “On the Dead Homies” pays tribute to lost loved ones.
The album closes with reflective tracks like “Mentally Crazy,” which spotlight the importance of mental health. With his production aligning both past and present, and consistent guest contribution that is better than previous projects, Daz makes here a worthy follow-up to his debut album. This isn't just a follow-up; it's a statement that Daz Dillinger is still a dominant force on the West Coast. And yes, with a score of 8/10, he stays nice and salty in the game.
