Salt-N-Pepa: First Female Hiphoppers Honored in Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

On Nov. 8, 2025, legendary hip-hop group Salt-N-Pepa was officially inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The event marked a milestone for the Queens-bred trio, consisting of Cheryl ‘Salt’ James, Sandra ‘Pepa’ Denton and DJ Spinderella (Deidra Roper), who rocked the hip-hop scene in the late 1980s and 1990s.

DJ Spinderella, who joined the group at age 16, reflected on her four-decade career during her induction speech. She stated, ‘I have been DJing for 40 years and I am the first female DJ in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This statement highlights the historical significance of her recognition.

Salt-N-Pepa's influence on music cannot be underestimated. With platinum albums and Grammy-winning tracks such as ‘None of Your Business,’ they have enriched the hip-hop genre. Hits such as ‘Push It,’ ‘Shoop’ and ‘Whatta Man’ dominated radio and covered topics ranging from safe sex to female empowerment.

The group began in the mid-'80s when James and Denton met while working at Sears. Their collaboration with producer Hurby Azor led to their breakthrough, and Roper's addition as DJ Spinderella completed the legendary lineup that would reshape the hip-hop landscape.

During the ceremony, the group also talked about ongoing legal battle with Universal Music Group (UMG) over ownership of their master recordings. They used their platform to advocate for artists' rights. The induction represents not only a personal triumph, but also recognition for female pioneers who paved the way for future generations in hip-hop.

Spinderella's historic achievement as the first female DJ in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame highlights the evolving recognition of hip-hop's diverse contributions. Her four-decade career spans from the genre's formative years to its current global dominance.

The 2025 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class also included Outkast, Cyndi Lauper and The White Stripes, but Salt-N-Pepa's induction has special significance for female representation in hip-hop history.

This event highlights the ongoing struggle for recognition and rights within the music industry, especially for female artists and pioneers in hip-hop.
