Santana Fox, born and raised on the streets of New York, has once again shown with her second EP that musical blood runs richly through her veins. The daughter of Mobb Deep's legendary Prodigy, she followed in her father's footsteps and began to make a name for herself in the hip-hop scene. After losing her father, she focused on her music and released a string of singles until her debut album, “Girl Next Door.” The jump to her first EP, “Eye Candy,” was a big step in her career, considering she produced it herself and took her lyrics to the next level.
Although fans eagerly awaited the release of “Femme Fatale” last October, her latest creation “She's a Rebel!” is now in the spotlight. The EP opens with an intriguing intro that immediately sucks you deep into her world. She then kicks off with “‘Till the Angels Come,” a track with a self-produced haunting boom bap beat in which she talks about making enemies disappear from the face of the earth. Then, with “Raspy Berry,” she throws into the mix a promise that she will get revenge, even in the afterlife.
With a collabo like “Deja Vu,” she makes things rock alongside Big Twins and Chung on a dark and stark instrumental. The warning: don't get them too hyped or the storm will erupt. In “Taboo,” which features Hus Kingpin, the competition is kindly but urgently asked to give it up.
The second half of the EP begins with “Daydreamin’,” a track in which Fox sets her sights and lets the booze flow copiously. In “Crash Out” featuring Mijita, she takes on a more mischievous tone and shows her sultry side. With “Lucky Girl” in which Pohlosweater joins in, she silences the jaws of people who talk too much, while she closes with “Lip Gloss on the Blunt,” a song in which she trusts her intuition and disregards the opinions of others.
Soon hip-hop fans will be able to indulge in Mobb Deep's upcoming and latest album “Infinite,” which will be released under Mass Appeal Records. In the meantime, Santana Fox shows with her new EP that she has grown considerably as an artist. Her production skills have risen to a new level and her lyrics are sharper than ever, even if she might have been allowed to leave the guests at home at times.
Despite that, we give this EP a respectable 7/10. We enjoyed the vibes that Fox puts down and look forward to the next shot of salt that she slings into the hip-hop world.
