A cousin of Del the Funky Homosapien & Kam, he made his first moves in the rap game with the group C.I.A. before becoming world famous as a member of the iconic N.W.A. Ice Cube's \u2018Death Certificate\u2019 is an absolute must-know in west coast rap thanks to its profound racial and political themes. His debut on Lench Mob Records, \u2018The Predator,\u2019 was bursting with raw street tales that skillfully exposed the racial tensions in the U.S. \u2018Lethal Injection\u2019 introduced a heavier g-funk sound, while his \u2018War & Peace\u2019 double album was the latest feat with Priority.<\/p>\n
Fast forward to 2006, when Ice Cube made his return with \u2018Laugh Now, Cry Later\u2019 at Virgin Music & EMI Records after a period full of acting. In the same vein was \u2018Raw Footage,\u2019 although that album was mid in comparison. With \u2018I'm the West,\u2019 Cube had a dip, but with \u2018Everythang's Corrupt,\u2019 he managed to bring some salt to the pot again, although not groundbreaking.<\/p>\n
In recent drops, Cube has settled down again. \u2018Man Down\u2019 gave a fat nod to his beginning days last year, and now we have the sequel \u2018Man Up\u2019. The album kicks off with \u2018Man Power,\u2019 produced by E-A-Ski, which directly asks the listener about the stinginess of their masculinity. Cube takes a fierce line in \u2018What You Gonna Do About It?\u2019 and points out the wannabe gangstas. \u2018Freedumb\u2019 opens your eyes to the fact that we are checked 24\/7 via smartphones and \u2018Guess What?\u2019 paints his suspicious analysis of \u2018friend or foe.<\/p>\n
The message is clear in \u2018Forget Me If You Ain't wit Me,\u2019 and with the single \u2018Before Hip Hop,\u2019 Cube looks back to his pre-fame days, draped over a Hallway Productionz beat. Along with Scarface, he has his say on \u2018Act My Age,\u2019 trap-style, as a shoutout to the older MCs. \u2018Ratchet Ass Mouth\u2019 serves a thick warning of what chicks to avoid.<\/p>\n
With an old school \u2018California Dreamin\u2019\u2019 vibe, \u2018Respect My Space\u2019 peaks with g-funk references to that West Coast life. \u2018That Salt & Pepper,\u2019 over a funky Erick Sermon beat, and \u2018Bring Everybody,\u2019 loaded with karisma and no purpose left to it, to \u2018All Work No Play\u2019 in which Cube challenges the OGs who share the same vibes.<\/p>\n
Despite reviews of the past two decades, including the \u2018War of the Worlds\u2019 flop, \u2018Man Down\u2019 shows that Ice Cube still knows how to keep the game salty. \u2018Man Up\u2019 follows its own but slightly less edgy course. The album may have fewer productions than \u2018Man Down,\u2019 but still scores a salty 6 out of 10 deservedly. What do you say, is Cube still the G.O.A.T.?<\/p>\n
