New York legend V Don is back on the scene, delivering his third EP, now under the banner of Black Soprano Family Records and Roc Nation Records. Over the past 15 years, V Don has emerged as one of the most sought-after producers in the underground scene. His dope collaborations with artists such as Willie the Kid, Ransom and Estee Nack show that he has salted the game in a way that few producers imitate him. After his strong debut album "The Opiate" and his previous EP "Better Than Money" - which recently celebrated its three-year anniversary - he now comes out with "Sent For."
The EP kicks off with the track "Mafia" by Eto, a delicious gritty boom bap that is about positioning yourself in the scene. On "Fortunate," Hobx and WhoisBravy bring those addictive vibes with dope strings, kicks and snares, and talk about maintaining their baller mentality. "The Same Day" by Benny the Butcher and Conway the Machine is pure salt; the two translate their goals into inspiring bars that touch you deeply. Then there's "Episode" by Lloyd Banks in which he tells you without blinking an eye that his life is complete.
The track "Too Much" by Al-Doe and Willie the Kid brings us closer to the end of the EP and plays with the idea of taking your chances without drums. "Old Kemba" by BabyMaine and Ty da Dale returns to that authentic boom bap vibe, talking about staying hands-on with their work. "Know Me" closes this EP with Elcamino and Sule being like snipers, handing out headshots to anyone who doesn't know how things really are. They urge you to better face reality.
Whether it's his involvement in projects such as "Deutsche Marks," "B.R.A.P. (Born Rewards & Penalties)" or the "Chaos is My Ladder" duology, V Don has more than proven that he is a leading player in the underground hip-hop world. This new EP showcases the same raw boom bap sound we've come to expect from him, and he recruits an impressive lineup of artists to effortlessly spit over his beats. With a score of 8/10, "Sent For" is salty enough to grab the attention of an even larger audience.
V Don continues to prove that he is not only a producer, but also has a sights to bring the underground sounds to a wider audience. We're fans, how about you?
