The Pharcyde, the legendary alternative hip-hop formation from sunny Los Angeles, continues to salt the scene despite their long break. The crew now consists of Fatlip, Imani and Slimkid3, and they are back with a brand new EP. Back then, they were a foursome, and their earlier albums, 'Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde' and 'Labcabincalifornia,' are still hailed as classics in west-coast hip-hop. Albums such as 'Plain Rap' enjoyed moderate success, while 'Humboldt Beginnings' and 'Spear of the Nation' drove the fan base into contention. But now they are back to rekindle the love of salty, experimental vibes with this brand-new EP, the second in their impressive discography.
The EP begins with the track "Citrus Nioxide," a collaboration with the eccentric Danny Brown and produced by Rockwilder. Here they drop bars about life's questions and the constant struggle to stay on top. This song sets the tone for a short but powerful track list of four songs. "Oscar" is perhaps the only song that falls just short of the mark, in which they belt out an "Oscar-worthy" act. But rest assured, the self-titled track will bring you back with prominent piano sounds thanks to Rick Rock, and it's all about not letting life pass you by. Finally, "Phabulous" closes it out with soulful vibes from Khrysis, a perfect reminder of who The Pharcyde really are.
Nearly three years after their reunion without Bootie Brown, The Pharcyde has brought saltiness back to the scene. The EP, titled "Timeless," is an experimental connection between their unique legacy of humor and jazz infused beats and modern, unconventional hip-hop. After nearly two decades without new tracks, they used this time to collaborate with producers they have always admired. This resulted in a rock-solid comeback that makes old-school fans smile and introduces new listeners to their unique style.
A concise review gives this EP a 7/10, illustrating solidity and creative innovation. These gentlemen have not only reinvented themselves, but have shown that they can still sprinkle a load of salt over the scene. They respect their past, but also look to the future of the hip-hop world with fresh angles and bold sounds. What do you think? Have The Pharcyde salted the game again with this EP? Either way, it's clear that this group has no intention of passing themselves by, and with a lot of style.
