It seems Cali-based DJ Fresh and New York MC The Musalini have decided to join forces to give the underground scene a load of salt with The Musalini's tenth studio album. Since dropping his first mixtape "Musalini Season" in 2018, Musalini has really embraced the dirty, underground sound. He has since had quite a few projects to his name, including several full-lengths, tapes and EPs. And let's not forget his killer release "Return of the Oro." Collaborations with top producers like 38 Spesh and 9th Wonder already provided pure saltiness to his discography. But now he and DJ Fresh are going for a real coast-to-coast experience with "Live & Let Fly."
The album kicks off with "Late Nite," where pianos pull you into a funky boom bap vibe while Musalini calls on his "baby girl" to enjoy life. Then there's "Moneyyyyyyy," an ode to his ride or die that means everything to him. In "Speeding," Musalini throws a verse about his lack of patience but plenty of time, followed by "Player's Ball," where he teams up with Planet Asia & Silent Snipers to show off his inner pimp on a funky beat.
Izzy Hott jumps on the track "Double Life," an advice session about knowing what waters you're getting into. A sample peaks your ears while "Good Game" comes in with a trap vibe as Musalini talks about his D ways. "Polo Scarf" colors jazzy as Musalini spits pure bars, and he talks real talk on the soulful "Old Soul" about how time really does cost money.
The title track with O Finess delivers a continuation of those funk vibes while pretending to live above the rest. "Red Eye" calmly describes how Mus falls asleep on the plane, but wakes up in the West Coast. In "Fly Zone," he and John Dutch exclaim that they're the world's styliest mofos. And closing track "Can't Buy Love" with Silent Snipers talks about cherishing life.
With "Live & Let Fly," the producer from the West and the lyricist from the East have a clear tribute to Kool G Rap & DJ Polo's legendary album "Live & Let Die." Here everything flows together perfectly, with each distinct element of their respective scenes. After a slight disappointment of "The Pierre Hotel," this new vibe with DJ Fresh brings back the magic we felt in "Mackaroni" over a year ago. A must-listen that I give with much love: a 7 out of 10. How saltier can it get?
