Detroit's own Quest Mcody, a battle rapper with skills, flips the game again with a fresh EP. This kid isn't just anybody; he's the left-hand man of Marv Won of the legendary Fat Killahz crew. Known for the Ctrl+Alt+Delete mixtapes and his dope releases like King Cody & The Conquest, he's a true striker legend. His debut, The Light Project, was already fire, but the follow-up record Th3 Gospel in 2018 gave everyone a new level of salt - and now he drops us in Smoker's Alley.
That intro track “I Just Wanna Smoke” is like a thick weed cloud in the trap vibe. Quest throws out the desire for it with every bar. “Safe,” on the other hand, is a soulful boom bap banger where he kicks against the hypocrites who rap about drugs while lining their own pockets in the scene. And yes, that's pure fire.
With his own hand in the production of “Duly Noted,” Quest lays his heart bare, wishing he wouldn't be forgotten when he's gone. Next comes “Seems Like It,” a track that captures the ego of self-loathing fans by boiling them in their own showboating suds.
And just when you think the EP has reached its climax, “Covered” comes in with a clean drumless vibe, in which Quest chills with stacks of cash. In “Pray for the Prey,” he spins a sample backwards and gives props to his mother for all the blessings. He checks himself and apologizes for any gray hair he may have given her. And the closing track “Bring You Back” is an emotional throwback, aided by Marv's support, with Quest dwelling on images of someone no longer by his side.
I really hope Quest Mcody doesn't keep us waiting long for more tracks, because in the battle rap scene he stands his ground alongside his brother in rhyme. Smoker's Alley is a gem not only for stoners. Even those who usually don't put anything on will be impressed by the tight production and sharp lyrics. This Detroit veteran is a master of his craft and made his mark with this salty EP. Score? A smashing 8/10.
